What is organic cocoa powder

Cocoa, the main ingredient of chocolate, comes from the cocoa bean – Theobroma cacao, an indigenous plant of the Amazon region that was domesticated and used by pre-Columbian cultures such as the Olmecs, Mocayas, and Mayans more than 5,000 years ago.

Organic cocoa powder is made from the dried cocoa solids extracted from cocoa butter, which is a product of the ground nibs of roasted, fermented cocoa beans. To convert cocoa mass (generally alkalized cocoa mass) into cocoa powder, a degreasing process is carried out by pressing the mass in a mechanical or hydraulic press. In this way, some of the fat (cocoa butter) is removed, and cocoa cake (compressed cocoa powder) is produced. Cocoa powder is obtained by grinding cocoa cakes. Generally, the fat content of cocoa powder is 10-24%.

Organic cocoa powder in soaps, lotions and scrubs

You can use organic coca powder in your soaps, lotions and scrubs, not only for the skin benefits, but also if you want to achieve the color tan. Depending on the amount you use, you can get a light to deep brown color.

How to add organic cocoa powder to your soap mix

There are many ways to add cocoa powder to your soap. You can add it only after the lye is added and mixed with the warmed butters and oils. Usually you add 1-2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to a portion of your batter (depending on how dark you want that portion of the batter to be), you then add this portion to your main batter. You can also make swirls or add it as a line of chocolate.

Try adding cocoa powder directly to your mix if you want a grittier texture. It is not necessary to pre-mix your cocoa powder, but if you want a perfectly smooth texture, you can add it to a carrier oil. Try adding 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder to 2 tablespoons of sweet almond oil or avocado oil. Not only do you then create a smooth texture, but you also add superfat. Cocoa powder dissolves easily in a carrier oil and should not speed up your soap recipe.

How does organic cocoa powder feel and look in soap?

Chocolate feels very silky in soap, which means that when you wet the soap, the lather will make big silky bubbles. You’ll love the feeling chocolate gives to soap and especially the way your skin feels after use. If you use a lot of chocolate, you will get brown bubbles and brown foam. When you see the chocolate, you know it’s there and you’ll really benefit from it. This is the whole point of using it, right?
