Gum arabic is a natural gum produced from the sap of acacia trees. Gum arabic is composed of polysaccharides (multi-chain starches) and glycoproteins (protein/sugar molecules). It is used as an emulsifier, emulsion stabilizer, thickener, emollient, suspending agent and foam stabilizer in cosmetics, bath and body products and other skin care applications. Acacia gum is a water-soluble gum. It should be added to the aqueous phase of lotions and creams. It is added in small amounts to some powder applications to keep powder in loose form.
Gum arabic is obtained from the trunk and leaves of several species of African acacia. In cosmetics it is used because of its film forming properties. When mixed with water, it forms a kind of gel that improves the texture of the products. It is widely used in mascaras and eyeliners to enhance their outfit. In toothpaste, it can also have an anti-caries effect, as can sodium fluoride.
