Many commercial makeup removers rely on harsh cleansing agents that strip the skin’s protective lipid barrier. Crafting your own cleanser is an easy, rewarding way to take back control of your skincare routine—allowing you to tailor every ingredient to your skin type while skipping unnecessary synthetic fillers and fragrances.

The Basics of Natural Cleansing

To break down makeup effectively, it helps to look at the chemistry behind cosmetics. Most foundations, concealers, and mascaras are formulated with waxes and oils. Thanks to the basic rule that “like dissolves like,” botanical oils effortlessly melt away stubborn pigments and waterproof formulas without disrupting your skin barrier.

Choosing the right natural makeup ingredients allows you to target specific skin concerns while you cleanse. Castor oil provides a rich, deep-cleansing effect that draws out impurities from congested pores. Lighter carrier oils—like sweet almond, jojoba, and grapeseed—absorb smoothly and leave behind zero heavy residue. For mature or dry complexions, incorporating argan oil for skin and hair delivers an intensive boost of nourishing fatty acids. You can mix and match different natural oils and butters until you achieve the exact texture and slip you prefer. This gentle oil-based approach is especially well-suited if you wear mineral makeup for sensitive skin during the day.

Jojoba Oil (Golden Jojoba Oil) Organic

<bdi>€7.95</bdi><bdi>€6.57</bdi> – <bdi>€3,449.95</bdi><bdi>€2,851.20</bdi>Price range: €7.95€6.57 through €3,449.95€2,851.20 incl. The options may be chosen on the product page

Recipe 1: The Oil Cleansing Method (OCM)

The Oil Cleansing Method relies exclusively on pure plant oils. Because the blend is completely anhydrous (water-free), you don’t need any emulsifiers or preservatives. Simply massage the oil into dry skin and gently wipe it away with a warm, damp cloth.

20% Castor oil (reduce to 10% for dry or sensitive skin)

79.5% Carrier oil (such as jojoba, sweet almond, or grapeseed oil)

0.5% Vitamin E oil (acts as an antioxidant to prevent the oils from oxidizing)

Combine the ingredients in a clean bottle and swirl gently to blend. In the evening, massage a few drops directly onto dry skin until makeup and daily grime dissolve. Draping a warm, damp washcloth over your face allows the steam to soften your pores, making it effortless to wipe everything away clean. For added botanical benefits, you can also make an infused oil beforehand using soothing herbs such as chamomile or calendula as your carrier base.

Recipe 2: Bi-Phase Makeup Remover

A bi-phase makeup remover gives you the best of both worlds: a refreshing water phase combined with an oil phase that cuts straight through waterproof mascara. Because oil and water naturally separate without an emulsifier, a quick shake right before application creates a temporary blend that cleanses without leaving a heavy film.

49% Demineralized water (or a botanical hydrosol, like rose water)

49% Light plant oil (such as fractionated coconut oil or moringa oil)

1% Phenoxyethanol (broad-spectrum preservative)

1% Vitamin E oil

Pour all the ingredients directly into a clean bottle. Without an emulsifying agent, the water and oil layers will remain distinctly separate—which is intentional. Shake the bottle vigorously right before use to combine the phases, then saturate a reusable cotton pad and gently sweep it across your face and eyes.

Recipe 3: Gentle Micellar Water

Micellar water leaves skin thoroughly clean and toned without any oily residue. It relies on micelles—microscopic clusters of mild surfactant molecules that act like tiny magnets, lifting away dirt, sebum, and makeup with minimal friction.

90% Demineralized water

3% Vegetable glycerin

1% Aloe vera gel base

2% Decyl glucoside (a mild, plant-derived surfactant)

1% Polysorbate 80

1% Phenoxyethanol

Combine the demineralized water, aloe vera base, and glycerin. Incorporating glycerin into skincare helps draw moisture into the skin, preventing any post-cleansing tightness. Next, gently stir in the decyl glucoside and polysorbate 80, working slowly to avoid creating excess foam. Polysorbate 80 acts as a solubilizer, helping to disperse trace oils and botanical extracts evenly throughout the water base. To learn more about how ingredients bridge oil and water, read our guide explaining what a cosmetic emulsifier is and how it functions.

Aloe Vera Gel Base

<bdi>€4.95</bdi><bdi>€4.09</bdi> – <bdi>€250.00</bdi><bdi>€206.61</bdi>Price range: €4.95€4.09 through €250.00€206.61 incl. Always wipe down your work surface, mixing beakers, and tools with rubbing alcohol before you begin.

Any formulation that contains water is vulnerable to microbial contamination, including bacteria, yeast, and mold. Never use ordinary tap water, and always include an effective broad-spectrum preservative in water-based recipes. An unpreserved aqueous product can spoil within days, presenting a serious risk of eye infections. For water-containing formulas, it is also good practice to test the pH with test strips and adjust it to a skin-friendly level of roughly 5.5.

Store your finished cleansers in airtight lotion bottles and packaging, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Finally, avoid adding strong essential oils—such as tea tree or citrus oils—to products intended for the eye area, as they can cause severe stinging and irritation.

Get Started with Your Own Formulas

Formulating your own cleansers gives you total control over what touches your skin each day. Whether you prefer the rich, comforting feel of a cleansing oil or the weightless finish of micellar water, every formula can be adjusted to your skin’s unique preferences.
