Not all waxes perform the same way. While container candles require soft wax that adheres securely to glass, wax melts demand a harder wax that contracts slightly as it cools. This ensures your melts release effortlessly from molds without cracking or leaving greasy residue behind. Soy blends designed for pillar candles and tarts—such as EcoSoya Melt or Golden Wax 494—are excellent options, offering superior scent throw and a smooth, professional finish. Explore the characteristics of each wax type in our beginner’s guide to candle wax.

Achieving a strong scent throw comes down to accurate measurement. Most melt waxes can hold a fragrance load between 6% and 10%. Always weigh your ingredients in grams rather than measuring by volume (milliliters), as fragrance oils vary widely in density. For a standard 10% fragrance load, use 10 grams of fragrance oil for every 100 grams of melted wax.

Temperature control is equally critical. Adding fragrance at the correct temperature ensures optimal scent retention: if the wax is too hot, the delicate aromatic notes will dissipate into the air; if it is too cool, the oil will not incorporate smoothly. For an in-depth breakdown of calculations, check out our guide on how much fragrance oil to use in candles.

Step-by-Step Guide

Make sure your molds are clean, dry, and dust-free before you pour. When using plastic clamshells, monitor your pouring temperature carefully to prevent the plastic from warping.

-

- Melt the wax: Set up a double boiler and melt your wax slowly over medium-low heat until it reaches 80–85°C. Monitor the temperature using your digital thermometer and stir occasionally for even heating.

- Add the color: Once the wax is completely melted, stir in your chosen dye. Liquid dyes and dye chips create vibrant, uniform color, while mica powder produces a mesmerizing, swirling shimmer in your burner.

- Incorporate fragrance: Let the wax cool to roughly 70°C, then pour in your fragrance oil. Stir gently yet thoroughly for at least two minutes to ensure the oil fully bonds with the wax molecules.

- Pour into molds: Slowly pour the wax into your mold cavities, filling each close to the brim. If using plastic clamshells, wait until the wax cools to around 60°C to protect the packaging.

- Cool undisturbed: Leave the filled molds on a level surface at room temperature. Avoid moving or bumping them while they set to ensure smooth, flat tops.

- Unmold: Once the melts are completely solid and cool to the touch—typically after several hours—gently pop them out of their molds.
