This test assesses whether a cosmetic product <strong>remains stable for its intended shelf life of 12 months<\/strong> and whether the <strong>packaging is compatible with the formulation<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During this test, the product is exposed to controlled conditions for an accelerated test period of <strong>4 weeks<\/strong>. Based on this accelerated stability test, a scientifically based estimate can be made of the stability of the product during <strong>12 months of storage under normal conditions<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This test is conducted according to <strong>ISO 18811:2018<\/strong>, the international standard for stability testing of cosmetic products.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an abbreviated test for a 12 Month Shelf Life indication on the product label. The standard shelf life test is: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youwish.nl\/en\/buy\/services-en\/laboratory-tests\/stability-test-and-compatibility-test-laboratory\/\">Stability Test and Compatibility Test Laboratory<\/a> <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-waarom-stabiliteitstesten-belangrijk-zijn\">Why stability testing is important<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cosmetic products must remain safe, effective and stable throughout their shelf life. Instability can lead to: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>discoloration of the product<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>odor change<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>phase separation in emulsions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>change in viscosity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>loss of efficacy of ingredients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>interaction with packaging<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, incompatible packaging can lead to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>deformation or discoloration of the packaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>migration of substances from the packaging to the product<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>leakage or damage to packaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>deterioration of pumping or dispensing systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a stability test, these problems can <strong>be detected early<\/strong>, even before the product is launched on the market.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shelf life according to the EU Cosmetic Regulation<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <strong>Article 19 of the EU Cosmetic Regulation (1223\/2009)<\/strong>, the shelf life of a cosmetic product must be indicated in one of two ways:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Date of minimum shelf life (Best before)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PAO &#8211; Period After Opening<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which of these two is used depends on the stability of the product.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-product-met-stabiliteit-van-12-maanden\">1. Product with stability of 12 months<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a stability test shows that the product <strong>remains stable for at least 12 months<\/strong>, but <strong>not more than 30 months<\/strong>, the label must include a <strong>date of minimum shelf life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is usually represented by the <strong>hourglass symbol<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example on the label:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Best before: <strong>06\/2027<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or: <strong>Best before end: 06\/2027<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that the product <strong>will remain stable unopened until that date<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, a <strong>PAO symbol is usually not required<\/strong> because the shelf life is already indicated by a specific date.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-product-met-stabiliteit-van-30-maanden-of-langer\">2. Product with stability of 30 months or longer<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When stability tests show that a product <strong>remains stable for at least 30 months<\/strong>, <strong>there is no<\/strong> need for <strong>a best before date<\/strong> on the label.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the product must have a <strong>PAO (Period After Opening) symbol<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the familiar <strong>open pot symbol<\/strong> with a number of months.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Example:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>12M<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>24M<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that the product <strong>can be used safely for 12 or 24 months after opening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-verschil-houdbaarheid-op-product-label\">Difference shelf life on product label<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><thead><tr><th>Stability demonstrated<\/th><th>Label requirement<\/th><th>Symbol<\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td>&lt; 30 months (e.g., 12 months)<\/td><td>Best before date required<\/td><td>Hourglass<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>\u2265 30 months<\/td><td>No best before needed<\/td><td>PAO symbol<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical difference for cosmetic brands<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12 months of stability<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benefits:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>shorter test possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>often sufficient for niche products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disadvantages:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>best before date required on label<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>logistically less flexible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>retailers sometimes do not accept a short shelf life<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">30 months of stability<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benefits:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>no best before date needed<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PAO symbol only<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>easier inventory management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>better for exports and retail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disadvantages:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>longer stability test needed<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wat-wordt-getest\">What is being tested<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the stability test, different aspects of the cosmetic product are analyzed.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fysische-stabiliteit\">Physical stability<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is verified that the product retains its original properties:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>color<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>scent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>appearance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>texture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>viscosity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>phase stability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-chemische-stabiliteit\">Chemical stability<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The formulation is checked for possible changes or degradation of ingredients.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-verpakking-compatibiliteit\">Packaging compatibility<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The product is tested in the <strong>commercial package<\/strong> to assess whether product-package interactions occur.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attention will be paid to:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>deformation of packaging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>discoloration of packaging or product<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>leakage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>compatibility with pumping or locking mechanisms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>possible migration effects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-testmethode-volgens-iso-18811-2018\">Testing method according to ISO 18811:2018<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The test is performed according to the international standard <strong>ISO 18811:2018 &#8211; Cosmetics &#8211; Stability testing<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the test, samples are stored under controlled conditions to simulate accelerated aging. During the test period, observations and measurements are made at set times. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The evaluation includes:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>visual inspection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>physical assessment of the product<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>control of packaging and sealing mechanisms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>documentation of any changes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All observations are recorded in a detailed <strong>laboratory report<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-fotodocumentatie-van-de-test\">Photo documentation of the test<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the stability test, <strong>photographs of the samples<\/strong> are taken at different times during the test period.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This photo documentation:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shows visually if changes are occurring<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>supports stability assessment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>may be included in the Product Information File (PIF)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provides additional transparency for quality control<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photos are part of the final <strong>test report<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-testduur\">Test duration<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Total duration of the test: 4 weeks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This accelerated stability test allows an indication of a <strong>12-month shelf life<\/strong> under normal storage conditions.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benodigde-monsters\">Required samples<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To perform the test, we need the following samples:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>6 pieces in the final package in which the product will be sold<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and 200 ml or 200 g extra<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important that the packaging be identical to that which will be used in the marketplace.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-wanneer-is-een-stabiliteitstest-nodig\">When is a stability test necessary<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stability test is often performed in the following situations:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the development of a new cosmetic product<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>when new packaging is used<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>when changing the wording<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>upon extension of shelf life<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As part of the <strong>Product Information File (PIF)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the EU Cosmetic Regulation does not require a specific test, the manufacturer must <strong>have evidence that the product remains stable during the stated shelf life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stability test according to ISO 18811 is a widely used and reliable method for this purpose.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-resultaat-van-de-test\">Result of the test<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon completion of the test, you will receive a <strong>laboratory report<\/strong> with:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>description of the test method<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>test conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>observations during the test period<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>evaluation of product stability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>assessment of packaging compatibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>photo documentation of the samples<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conclusion on stability for <strong>12-month shelf life<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This report can be used as part of <strong>cosmetics product documentation<\/strong>, such as the <strong>PIF<\/strong> and <strong>safety assessment (CPSR)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Stability and Compatibility Test is an essential laboratory test for cosmetic products.
