Lemongrass, or Lemongrass Essential Oil Organic, comes from Cymbopogon species. In cosmetics, we see mainly C. flexuosus (East Indian) and C. citratus (West Indian). Cultivation areas are in India and Sri Lanka, as well as Guatemala and Madagascar. Warmth, regular rain and light, well-draining soil produce an oil with a bright, citral top note. In Kerala, during the wet season, the field edge sometimes literally smells like lemon. Sounds romantic, is mostly terroir in action.

How it is made

The oil is extracted by steam distillation from fresh or partially dried leaves. The leaf is cut, briefly rewound and then distilled. The steam takes the volatile components with it, after which oil and water separate. Outcome. A potent, lemon-fresh oil with a green edge and high citral fraction. Simple process, but the timing of harvest and distillation determines much of the quality.

Uses and applications

Lemongrass is known in aroma blends for focus and freshness. It gives rooms a clean feel and works brightening in start-of-the-day formulas. In wellness, you find it in massage oil, bath oil and sometimes in sauna fragrances. Practical Tip. Start low in dosage and build up. Lemongrass is a top note that dominates quickly, which is fine for impact, but may require fine-tuning.

In soaps and cosmetics

In cosmetic products, lemongrass gives a sparkling, clean tone. Commonly used in cleansers and toners for a fresh skin feel. In cold process soap, the scent remains remarkably present, especially when combined with an anchor such as litsea cubeba or a touch of cedar. Small example. A batch of 1 kilo of handmade soap scented with lemongrass and a hint of ginger remains fresh and “crisp” after curing. Always consider IFRA categories and formulate conservatively in leave-on. Test per recipe and target audience.

In candles and home perfume

Lemongrass has fast diffusion and gives instant throw. This is ideal for candles and room sprays in, say, an open kitchen of about 12 sq. ft. where you want an instant fresh reset. In candles, the top note can dissipate faster without support. Therefore, combine with cedar, vetiver, pine or a drop of benzoin for body. In diffusers, it works nicely with bergamot for elevator. Small note. Check solubility and stability in your chosen base and always perform wick and shelf life tests.

Features and benefits

  • Aroma. Lemony, green, slightly spicy and clean.

  • Perception. Bright, energetic, orderly.

  • Performance. Strong top note, quick air freshening, good projection.

  • Chemical profile. Rich in citral (neral and geranial), with natural traces of limonene, myrcene and sometimes geraniol.

  • Formula Advantage. Gives fresh signature to soaps, cosmetics and home fragrance without sugar-sweet impression.

Quality and safety

Our organic lemongrass oil is 100% pure and undiluted. For skin application, always dilute and perform a patch test first. Do not use internally and avoid contact with eyes. Lemongrass is not phototoxic, but contains citral, a known fragrance allergen. Therefore, formulate according to IFRA and label according to EU allergen triggers where applicable. Store cool and dark. Oxidation increases the risk of sensitivity, so preferably work with fresh batches and seal well.

Why organic

Organic cultivation avoids synthetic pesticides and maintains biodiversity. That results in cleaner oil as well as transparency in the chain, which is important for brands that want to communicate clear choices. Frankly, also practical. Organic sourcing often provides a consistent, clear scent profile on which to build recipes year-on-year. We provide the necessary organic certification documentation per batch, so that you can also guarantee this towards your own quality file.
