Candle Burning Time Laboratory Test
The candle burn time test is a lab procedure to see how well and how long candles burn under standardized, controlled conditions. This test shows exactly how long a candle holds a stable flame, how efficiently it consumes wax and whether it does what the manufacturer says it will do in terms of burn time.
Purpose of the test
The purpose of this test is to determine the actual burn time and efficiency of a candle compared to the manufacturer’s specifications. It helps assess product quality, consistency and compliance with consumer expectations for performance and labeling accuracy.
Why the burn time test for candles is important
- Performance Verification: Confirms that the product meets the specified burn time and use claims.
- Quality assurance: detects irregular fire behavior, tunneling or incomplete wash consumption.
- Consumer satisfaction: ensures realistic and accurate product information on packaging.
- Production control: helps manufacturers improve wick selection, wax composition and holder design.
What the test evaluates
During the candle burn time test, the following aspects are analyzed:
- Measurement of candle burn time: checking how long the candle maintains a stable flame under normal use conditions.
- Comparison with manufacturer’s claim: Check that the actual burn time matches what is on the package or stated in the specifications.
- Test conditions: The test is conducted in a controlled environment with regulated temperature, humidity and ventilation to eliminate external factors such as drafts or uneven airflow.
- Analysis of candle wax consumption: observing the rate and pattern of wax consumption to assess combustion efficiency and uniformity.
Test procedure
- Sample preparation: a certain number of candles are selected for testing, ensuring that they are representative of the production batch.
- Environmental Settings: The test takes place in a controlled room with a stable temperature and no air movement.
- Ignition and monitoring: Each candle is lit and continuously monitored throughout the burn cycle.
- Data collection: The burn time, flame height, wax consumption and any irregularities (e.g. smoking, tunneling, uneven melting) are recorded.
- Comparison and Evaluation: Actual burn times are compared with the values specified by the manufacturer. Deviations outside the acceptable tolerance are noted.
Sample requirements
- Number of samples: minimum 3-6 candles, depending on product type and batch size
- Condition: Unused, undamaged and representative of the production batch
- Additional information: Product name, specified burn time, wick type and holder description
Results and reporting
The laboratory report includes:
- Test methodology and environmental conditions
- Actual measured burn time versus stated burn time
- Wax consumption pattern and observations of fire behavior
- Photographic documentation (before, during and after burning)
- Summary of deviations and performance rating
Why choose laboratory testing
Accurate measurement of burn duration requires controlled testing to eliminate environmental variables and ensure reproducible results. Burn duration testing provides manufacturers and distributors with verifiable, unbiased data that supports performance claims and improves product reliability.
TÜV-certified tests we offer
- EN 15493:2019 – Fire Safety Test. – Evaluates flame stability, holder integrity and self-extinguishing behavior to ensure that the candle burns safely during use.
- EN 15426:2018 – Soot Survey. – Measure visible soot and smoke emissions to confirm that the candle burns cleanly and does not affect indoor air quality.
Both tests are conducted under the supervision and certification of TÜV and provide independent confirmation that the candles meet European safety standards and industry best practices
