Red Lip Balm Stick Recipe
A simple lipstick is ideal for beginners. You don’t need water, so a preservative isn’t necessary. The combination of beeswax, cetearyl alcohol, castor oil, and cocoa butter creates a nice, firm lipstick that twists out of the tube easily and feels pleasant on the lips.
| Ingredient | Percentage | Gram |
|---|---|---|
| Castor oil | 35% | 35 g |
| Jojoba oil | 15% | 15 g |
| Beeswax | 15% | 15 g |
| Cocoa butter | 12% | 12 g |
| Cetearyl Alcohol | 8% | 8 g |
| Lip-safe pigment or pigment mixture | 14% | 14 g |
| Vitamin E | 0,5% | 0.5 g |
| Lip-safe flavoring | 0,5% | 0.5 g |
| Total | 100% | 100 g |
Methodology
- First, mix the pigment with a small amount of castor oil.
- Stir or grind until all pigment particles are completely dispersed.
- Place the remaining castor oil, jojoba oil, beeswax, cocoa butter, and cetearyl alcohol in a heat-resistant cup.
- Heat in a double boiler until everything has completely melted.
- Add the pigment dispersion and mix thoroughly.
- Let it cool to about 55°C.
- Add vitamin E and the lip-safe flavoring.
- Stir well once more.
- Carefully pour the lipstick into a lipstick mold or directly into lipstick tubes.
- Let it cool for at least one hour before removing the lipstick from the mold.

How to Make Lipstick Softer
Would you like a creamier lipstick?
- Reduce the beeswax content to 12%
- Increase the castor oil content to 38%
How to Make Lipstick Last Longer
For a lipstick that holds up better in hot weather:
- Increase the beeswax content to 18%
- Increase the cetearyl alcohol content to 10%
- Reduce the castor oil content to 30%
Matte lipstick
For a matte finish:
- Reduce the castor oil content to 30%
- Increase the pigment content to 16–18%
- Add 2–4% silica or another lip-safe mattifying filler (reduce the amount of jojoba oil accordingly).
Glossy lipstick
For extra shine:
- Increase the castor oil content to 40%
- Reduce the cocoa butter content to 8%
Important Tips
- Use only pigments and micas that are explicitly suitable for lip products.
- Mix the pigments as finely as possible to achieve an even, grain-free color.
- Do not heat the formula for longer than necessary to prevent discoloration or degradation of the ingredients.
- Always let a new formula cure for 24 hours before assessing its hardness and spreadability.
- Since this is a water-free formula, a preservative is not normally necessary. Be sure to follow proper hygiene practices and use clean materials. Vitamin E extends the shelf life of the oils, but it is not a preservative.
