Cold-Pressed Winter Forest Soap Recipe
A beautiful handmade soap, inspired by a peaceful walk through a snow-covered pine forest. Deep forest-green swirls contrast with creamy white soap, making it look as if snow is swirling through the pine trees.
Ingredients
- Olive oil 225 g
- Coconut oil 125 g
- Shea Butter 75 g
- Castor oil 25 g
- Cocoa butter 50 g
- Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) 69.0 g
- Distilled water 145 g
- Alpen Lodge & Winter Spar Fragrance oil, Max. 15 g
- Forest green, soap-safe mica
- Titanium dioxide, soap-safe – Optional
The amount of lye is an approximate calculation based on standard SAP values for about 5% superfat.
Instructions
- Wear safety goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, and long-sleeved clothing. Work in a well-ventilated area, away from children and pets.
- Carefully add the sodium hydroxide to the distilled water while stirring. Never add water to sodium hydroxide. Allow the solution to cool.
- Melt the coconut oil, shea butter, and cocoa butter. Add the olive oil and castor oil.
- Once the oils and the lye solution are at a suitable, reasonably similar temperature—around 30–40 °C—slowly mix them together.
- Mix until a light emulsion or a very thin “trace” forms.
- Add the fragrance oils in a verified, soap-safe concentration. First, test their effect on the “trace” and check for any discoloration.
- Divide the soap batter into two portions. Color one portion forest green and leave the other white, or color it lightly with titanium dioxide.
- Pour the two colors alternately into the mold to create a natural, forest-inspired swirl.
- Let the soap saponify and set; keep an eye on the temperature and prevent it from overheating.
- Remove the soap from the mold once it’s firm enough, cut it into pieces, and let it dry in a well-ventilated area for about 4–6 weeks, or longer if necessary.
Creative tip: Create a white top layer with a texture that resembles freshly fallen snow. Use green swirls throughout the soap to suggest evergreen branches beneath the frost.
