Before you can start making candles, you need to get a few supplies.

Candle wax for making your own candles

Want to make your own candles? Then you need candle wax. If you’re looking for wax to make candles, you have three basic options:

Kerosene wax: This is the cheapest and most common choice for making candles.
Beeswax: Beeswax is great for making natural candles, but it can be very expensive. It is sold in grains with a distinctive honeycomb pattern.
Soy wax: Soy wax is another natural alternative to kerosene wax, but much more affordable than beeswax. Soy candles are said to last up to 50% longer than kerosene candles.

Candle scent for making your own scented candles

Candles do not necessarily have to have a scent, but most people looking for ingredients to make their own candles do plan to add a scent to their creations.

For more scent options, you can buy candle making fragrance oils. These oils come in every scent you can imagine, from floral and fruit scents to fun combinations such as “Winter Wonderland” or “Summer Breeze.” Some fragrance oils are safe for the skin and can also be used to make lotions and soaps, but many people find that oils made specifically for candle making give the best results.

If you are interested in making aromatherapy candles and are not concerned about the cost of supplies, making candles with essential oils can be an enjoyable experience. Unlike synthetic fragrance oils, essential oils are made from natural plant extracts.

Candle dye

Candle wax is usually white or cream. If you want colored candles, you need to buy some kind of dye before you begin your project. Dye for making candles can be purchased in chips, blocks or small bottles. A little will get you a long way, so keep this in mind when deciding what color to give your candle.

Candle container and candle mold
