What is Zinc Oxide?

Zinc oxide is a widely used ingredient in cosmetics because of its many benefits for the skin. It is a mineral compound that occurs naturally and is known for its broad-spectrum UV protection. Zinc oxide is a white, powdery substance that is odorless and non-toxic.

Use of Zinc Oxide in cosmetics

One of the main uses of zinc oxide in cosmetics is as a sunscreen. Zinc oxide is a physical sunscreen that reflects UV rays from the skin. Unlike chemical sunscreens that absorb UV rays, physical sunscreens are less likely to cause skin irritation and are suitable for people with sensitive skin. Zinc oxide provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays, making it an excellent choice for broad-spectrum sun protection.

Zinc Oxide Non-Nano Uncoated

Most manufacturers use zinc oxide that is so highly refined (to nano particles) that it can enter the blood through the skin, which is not desirable. Also, the zinc particles are then often coated with a layer of silicone, which again can be harmful when combined with exposure to sunlight. Non-nano, uncoated zinc oxide is completely safe for use and an excellent ingredient for homemade, natural sunscreens.

Benefits of Zinc Oxide in Cosmetics

In addition to sun protection, zinc oxide is also used in cosmetics because of its ability to soothe the skin. It is often added to products such as creams, lotions and ointments to soothe and heal irritated skin. Zinc oxide has anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce redness and swelling. It is also effective in treating skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne.

Another benefit of zinc oxide in cosmetics is that it keeps excess oil production under control. Zinc oxide has an astringent effect on the skin, reducing the production of sebum, the oily substance that can clog pores and lead to pimples. By regulating sebum production, zinc oxide can help keep skin looking fresh and matte.

Making sunscreen lotion with zinc oxide

Zinc oxide is a popular ingredient in DIY cosmetics and tanning lotions because of its ability to provide sun protection and its emollient properties. Zinc oxide can further be mixed with any other natural oil to make your own natural sunscreen, or you can add it to a body lotion you like to use, for example. To know what sun protection factor (SPF) you get after blending keep these percentages of the weight of the oil or lotion you are using:

  • For Factor 2-5: Use 5% zinc oxide
  • For Factor 6-11: Use 10% zinc oxide
  • For Factor 12-19: Use 15% zinc oxide
  • For Factor >20: Use 20% zinc oxide

So for example, if you want to make a sunscreen with sun protection factor 6-11 with 100 grams of coconut oil, use 10 grams of zinc oxide.

Here’s how to use zinc oxide in your DIY formulas:

  • Determine the percentage of zinc oxide you want to use in your formula. A common range is 10-20% for awnings.
  • Wear protective clothing such as gloves and a mask to avoid inhaling the fine particles of zinc oxide.
  • To make a simple sunscreen, combine your chosen carrier oil (such as coconut oil or jojoba oil), shea butter, beeswax and zinc oxide in a double boiler.
  • Gently heat the mixture over low heat until everything is melted and well combined. Do not overheat the mixture, as this may affect the efficacy of the sunscreen.
  • Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool slightly.
  • Add any desired essential oils or fragrances to the mixture.
  • Pour the mixture into a clean, sterilized container and let it cool completely before using.
