Floating cork wicks create a unique, almost magical atmosphere, especially if you use a clear glass bowl. You can optionally decorate the water with flowers, crystals, colored stones or other non-flammable materials. That way, you can turn it into a beautiful table centerpiece, for example, for a party or a romantic evening.

How does a floating cork wick work?

1. Water as the base
   The first step is to fill a transparent bowl, glass jar or glass vessel with water. This water acts as the bottom layer, keeping the oil floating above it. Because water has a higher density than oil, the oil always stays on the surface of the water.
2. A layer of oil
   Next, carefully pour a layer of oil on top of the water. Usually (olive) oil, salad oil or sunflower oil is used, but basically any vegetable oil can serve this purpose. Make sure the layer is not too thick-one inch of oil is usually enough for a few hours of burning time.
3. Cork with Wick
   The cork serves as a holder for the wick, which floats on the oil layer due to the light weight of cork. The end of the wick sucks up the oil, just like an oil lamp, thus feeding the flame.
4. Lighting
   Once you have placed the wick, you can light it carefully. The flame burns the oil pulled up by the wick. As long as oil is present, the light will stay lit. When the oil runs out, the flame extinguishes by itself, or you can extinguish the candle manually by putting a glass or metal lid over it, for example.

Sustainable

Instead of using candles made of kerosene or even vegetable wax, burn purely on (natural) oil.

Safety

Because the water is below the oil, the risk of overheating or fire is reduced.
