Rainbow Fizzy Bath Truffles Recipe
A delicious bath truffle recipe. Because it contains butter, the bubbles are modest, but they do form a nice layer on the surface of the water.
Traditional solid bubble bars often take a week or longer to harden completely. That’s because most of the moisture in those recipes comes from glycerin. One of the advantages of this recipe is that, thanks to their higher butter content, the bath truffles become firm within just a few hours.
Although the bath truffles are very colorful thanks to the mica, the colors do not bleed into the bathwater. Polysorbate 80 helps distribute the dyes evenly throughout the water, preventing them from clumping. Oxides and pigments are not recommended because their larger particles are harder to mix and may stain the bathwater or the skin.
Ingredients
- 709 g sodium bicarbonate – 41%
- 198 g citric acid – 12%
- 369 g SLSA – 21%
- 71 g of tartar powder – 4%
- 1 teaspoon of silver EcoGlitter
- 170 g shea butter – 10%
- 128 g cocoa butter – 7%
- 43 g liquid glycerin – 3%
- 14 g polysorbate 80 – 1%
- 17 g Coconut Citrus Sorbet Fragrance oil – 1%
How to Make Bath Truffles
1
Place the shea butter and cocoa butter in a heat-resistant bowl. Melt the butters in the microwave in 30- to 60-second intervals. Be careful when removing the bowl from the microwave; it may be very hot.
2
Add Coconut Citrus Sorbet Fragrance Oil, polysorbate 80, and glycerin. Stir well with a spoon and set aside.
3
Place a fine-mesh sieve over a large mixing bowl. Sift the baking soda, citric acid, cream of tartar, and 1 teaspoon of Silver EcoGlitter into the bowl. Mix with a whisk.
Next, carefully add the SLSA (do not sift it). Add the SLSA last, because it easily forms dust and can irritate the respiratory tract. Wearing a dust mask is recommended. Gently mix all the dry ingredients with a whisk.
4
When the butter mixture reaches about 82 °C, add about one-third of the dry ingredients. Since the mixture is hot, it’s best to wear gloves while mixing.
5
Continue adding the dry ingredients gradually until everything is fully incorporated. The warmer the mixture is, the softer and easier it will be to knead. A dough temperature of about 29–38 °C results in a pleasant, malleable texture. If the mixture has become too cold, heat it in the microwave for another 10 to 20 seconds.
6
You now have a mixture. Divide it among 7 equal containers. It’s helpful to weigh the containers so that all the colors are the same size.
7
Add about 1/4 teaspoon of mica to each bowl and knead the color in thoroughly until no streaks are visible. If necessary, you can switch gloves when moving from warm to cool colors.
8
Clean your work surface. Place a sheet of parchment paper or wax paper on it and lightly dust it with baking soda to prevent sticking. Shape the red-pink dough into a long, flat roll and place it on the work surface.
9
Next, shape the orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple pieces of dough into long, flat rolls. Place each color on top of the previous one and gently press them together to form a single, even layer. Finally, place the uncolored dough on top of the purple layer.
10
Gently press all the layers together to form a single long roll about 30 cm long.
11
If you want to create a marbled effect, gently roll the roller a few times. Apply light pressure while rolling to prevent large cracks.
12
Use a sharp knife to carefully cut the roll into strips. The bottom may crumble a bit; that’s normal. If necessary, gently reshape the bath truffles with your hands. By rotating the roll slightly after each cut, the bath truffles will stay nicely round.
13
Carefully place each bath truffle, cut side down, on parchment paper or wax paper. Shape them a little more if necessary. Depending on the room temperature, the bars will be fully set after about 3 to 4 hours.
When you’re ready to use the bath truffles, place one in the tub for a slow, effervescent reaction that produces a light lather. If you want more lather, hold the bath truffle directly under the running bath faucet while breaking off small pieces of the bar.
