Beer Candle Recipe

Make your own surprisingly realistic beer candle using gold-colored transparent gel wax and a creamy white layer of wax to resemble a head. An original DIY candle recipe that looks just like a freshly poured beer. Perfect as a gift, for Father’s Day, or simply as an eye-catching homemade candle!

Beer Cake Recipe Ingredients

IngredientQuantity
Gel Wax220 g
Fragrance Oil6–10 g
Yellow/orange liquid candle dye0.25 gram
Soy wax50 g
Fragrance oils for foam1–2 g*
Cotton wick1 piece

Supplies

You’ll also need a heat-resistant beer glass, a thermometer, a melting pot, a stirring rod, and a tool to center the wick. Use only glassware that is specifically designed for candles or high thermal loads; a regular drinking glass may crack due to localized heating.

To choose the right wick size, check out this page: Candle Wick Size and Type Guide

Step 1 – Prepare the beer glass

Secure the wick firmly in the center of the base and keep it upright using a wick centerer.

The correct wick size depends on the inner diameter of the glass, the type of wax, the amount of perfume, and any dye. Therefore, you can only determine the final wick size by conducting burn tests.

Step 2 – Make the “beer”

Melt 220 g of gel wax. Gel wax requires extra attention to temperature and fragrance compatibility.

Add a very small amount of yellow or amber candle dye. You want to achieve a transparent, golden-yellow color that resembles lager or craft beer.

Next, add the appropriate fragrance oil at the temperature recommended by the wax and fragrance oil supplier.

Stir gently to prevent as many unwanted air bubbles as possible.

Step 3 – Pour the beer layer

Carefully pour the gold-colored gel wax into the glass.

Fill the glass about 75–80% full, leaving enough room at the top for the head.

A few small air bubbles can actually be a nice touch in this design: they give the impression of carbonation in beer.

Allow the gel wax to cool sufficiently and set before applying the foam layer.

Step 4 – Make the head

Melt about 50 g of soy wax. Then let the wax cool until it begins to thicken.

Whisk or stir the wax as it cools to create a light, creamy texture. Once the wax has a texture similar to thick whipped cream, you can spread it on top of the beer layer.

Make the top intentionally a little uneven. This makes it look much more like real beer foam.

Step 5 – Let the candle set

Let the candle cool completely and harden. Then trim the wick back to about 0.5 cm to 1 cm.

Then let the candle sit for a few days before lighting it.

Fragrance Ideas

When it comes to beer-scented candles, you can go far beyond just a literal beer scent. Consider, for example, Hop & Citrus, Honey Ale, Spiced Beer, Malt & Vanilla, Hop & Cedarwood, or a fresh IPA-inspired scent with grapefruit, citrus, and green/hoppy notes.
