The black Hawaiian salt is created by adding pure activated carbon from the lava rocks.

Black Hawaiian Flake Salt is a combination of sea salt extracted from the Pacific Ocean around the remote Hawaiian Islands and activated charcoal derived from coconut shells. The salt is infused with active charcoal from lava found in those regions, which gives the salt its deep obsidian hue.
