How do you use a digital pH meter?

The pH meter is an essential tool for accurately measuring pH levels in cosmetic products, shampoos, liquid soaps and solid soaps. Below is a step-by-step guide for each application.

You will need to recalibrate a digital pH meter from time to time. This is necessary to make sure the correct readings are taken. You can find the calibration powder here.

Measuring pH ofcosmetics (creams, lotions, serums)

  1. Take a small amount of the product (about 5-10 ml) and dilute it with an equal amount of distilled water in a clean glass container.
  2. Stir the mixture gently to get an even solution.
  3. Dip the electrode of the pH meter into the solution and follow the standard instructions for use.
  4. Note the pH value and check that it is within safe limits (usually between 4.5 and 7, depending on the type of cosmetics).

Measuring pH of shampoo and liquid soap

  1. Place a small amount of the shampoo or liquid soap in a clean container.
  2. Dilute the product with an equal amount of distilled water to reduce its viscosity.
  3. Gently stir the mixture until homogeneous.
  4. Dip the pH meter electrode into the mixture and follow the standard instructions for use.
  5. Make sure the pH is within the recommended range (usually 5 to 7, depending on skin friendliness).

Measuring pH of hard soap

  1. Grate a small amount of the soap (about 1 gram) and add it to 10-15 ml of distilled water in a glass container.
  2. Heat the container slightly (not above 40°C) and stir until the soap is mostly dissolved.
  3. Let the mixture cool to room temperature before measuring the pH.
  4. Dip the pH meter electrode into the solution and follow the standard instructions for use.
  5. The pH of solid soap is usually between 9 and 10, which is normal for soaps made with caustic soda.

Tips for accurate measurements

  • Make sure all materials, such as glass containers and stirring sticks, are clean so as not to affect pH measurements.
  • Always use distilled water to dilute, as tap water can upset the pH.
  • Calibrate the pH meter regularly, especially when using it for different products.

With these steps, you can accurately control pH levels and ensure that your cosmetics and soaps are safe and skin-friendly.
