Sodium hydroxide (NaOH), also known as lye, is an essential ingredient in soap making. When sodium hydroxide granules or flakes are mixed with a liquid, a lye solution is formed, which, when mixed with fats and oils, causes a chemical reaction called saponification. The result of saponification is beautiful handmade soap. Making soap is a wonderfully fun and addictive profession.

Inspired by the succulent notes of rainbow sherbet fragrance oil, this soap is bursting with colorful swirls.

Rainbow sherbet fragrance oil is a lovely scent, with notes of green apple, orange and grapefruit. It behaves well in cold process, which is essential for swirly design.

The important thing is not to mix the batter too long – use short punches of 2-3 seconds and then stir out with the hand blender for 5-10 seconds. Repeat until barely emulsified, then divide among 6 containers. The batter can be mixed quickly later (if needed), once the colors and fragrances are fully incorporated.

Ingredients

585 gr Palm oil
390 gr rapeseed oil
195 gr Rice bran oil
78 gr Castor oil
390 gr Coconut oil
195 gr Sunflower oil
117 gr Sweet Almond Oil
268 gr Sodium hydroxide Lye
600 gr distilled water
100 gr Rainbow Sherbet Fragrance Oil

White Mica
Warm pink Mica
Exuberant Orange Mica
Yellow Mica
Green Mica
Blue Mica
Purple Mica

Prepare color: Put 1/4 teaspoon of unmixed orange mica, yellow mica, green mica and blue mica in separate soap dishes. Put 1/2 teaspoon pink mica and purple mica in 2 separate soap dishes.

Fragrance Oil Preparation: Measure out 100 gr of Rainbow Sherbet Fragrance Oil into a glass container suitable for fragrance oil and set aside.

SAFETY FIRST: Make sure you handle the oil safely. That means safety glasses, gloves and long sleeves. Make sure children, pets, other distractions and trip hazards are out of the house or do not have access to your soap room. Always soap in a well-ventilated area.

How to make sherbet rainbow soap

Step 1

Slowly and carefully add the lye to the distilled water. Stir gently until the lye is completely dissolved. Set aside to cool.
Optional: For a harder soap that comes out of the mold faster, add 3.5 teaspoons of sodium lactate to the cooled lye water.

Step 2

Pour all the oil into a mixing bowl and placed it in the microwave. Heat until completely melted and mix well. Add 1 tablespoon of white Mica directly to the oils and mix until there are no more clumps.

Once the lye water and oils have cooled to 32.2 °C – 43.3 °C (and ideally are within 6 °C of each other), add the lye water to the oils and mix the mixture with sticks to form a very thin trail – be careful not to over-mix! We recommend pulsing 1-3 times and then using your hand blender to stir the mixture. Continue 2-3 times, until just emulsified.

Step 3

Divide the batter evenly among the trays containing the mica – each tray contains about 400-500 ml of soap. Use a spatula or whisk to stir the mica into the batter until there are no large lumps.
TIP: The large mixing bowl will be used again, so make sure it is scraped as clean of as much soap batter as possible.

Step 4

Add the fragrance oil evenly to each container of soap – you can also do it by eye. From light to dark, quickly whisk in the fragrance oil.

If the soap is very thin, you can pulse each color for 1-2 seconds (very fast!) to disperse the colors and get a light trail. The soap should be thin enough to pour into the mold and spread evenly. You want the soap to be smooth and have no texture.

Step 5

Start pouring 1/3 of the pink soap into the large bowl and run it down the side. While pouring, count 1, 2, 3 to keep each pour even. Continue pouring 1/3 of the orange, yellow, green, blue and purple soap batter into the bowl. Repeat this process until all the soap is layered in the large mixing bowl.

Step 6

Once all the soap is in the large bowl, begin to pour the soap into one corner of the mold. Pour slowly and count to 1,2,3, then raise the bowl to start pouring and then start again. Continue until all the soap is poured into the mold.

Step 7

Tap the mold on the countertop to remove any air bubbles. Spray with 99% isopropyl alcohol to prevent soda ash. We recommend isolating and gelling this soap so that the colors come out better. To do this, place the mold in the oven at low degrees for 1-2 hours.

Step 8

Remove the soap from the mold after 1-3 days (depending on whether you used sodium lactate or not). Cut the soap into bars. Let the soap cure for 4-6 weeks and enjoy!
