Avocado oil is prepared from the fruit itself, which is very rich in proteins, lecithin and vitamins A, B1, B2, B5 (Panthothenic acid), D&E and a high content of oleic acid (64%). This, combined with its palmitic acid content (11%), makes it a stable oil. Avocado oil is known for its ability to nourish the skin without making it feel greasy. Its moisturizing and revitalizing properties are used for very dry, dull, sensitive or inflamed skin and eczema.

Avocado oil in soap

I personally use avocado oil in many of my recipes at 5-15%. Because of its higher palmitic acid content, it actually contributes to a harder bar of soap (compared to other liquid oils such as almond, grapeseed, sunflower, safflower). So I like to use it in palmless formulations where I want all the hardness I can get in my formulation.

Avocado fatty acid profile and soap qualities

  • Lauric acid (hardness, cleansing, effervescence) 0%
  • Myristic acid (hardness, cleansing, effervescent foam) 0%
  • Linoleic acid (conditioning, moisturizing, silky foam) 5-15%
  • Oleic acid (conditioning, moisturizing, silky foam) 45-75%
  • Palmitic acid (hardness, stable creamy foam) 15-25%
  • Ricinoleic acid (conditioning, moisturizing, stable creamy lather) 0%
  • Stearic acid (hardness, stable foam) 1.5%
  • Iodine value (hardness, conditioning) 75-95 (on a scale of 0-100, with more hardness at 0)

Why should I use avocado oil?

Avocado oil is a great tool for preparing flavorful and healthy meals. It is an excellent source of antioxidants, essential fatty acids, minerals and vitamins. But have you ever thought about using this delicious fruit to soothe and heal your skin?

The absorbent oil is thought to have numerous benefits for your skin, such as moisturizing dry hands or working as a natural sunscreen. You can apply avocado oil directly to your skin or mix it with your favorite beauty products.

Are there any benefits to using avocado oil on my skin?

The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents in avocado oil help keep your skin smooth, strong and elastic. You can buy avocado oil in any health or supermarket and use it to:

  • soothe itchy skin
  • heal chapped skin
  • replenish dry skin
  • moisturize and hydrate the skin
  • protect skin from ultraviolet radiation
  • protect against skin damage

Some people call avocado oil an essential oil, but that’s not quite right. Thick and green colored, avocado oil is actually considered a carrier oil.

Essential oils are highly concentrated lubricants distilled from the aromatic parts of a plant, such as the root or leaves. Carrier oils are pressed from the seeds, nuts or other fatty parts of the fruit and are used to help dilute essential oils. Essential oils evaporate and have a strong odor, while carrier oils do not.

The main benefits of avocado oil are to soothe and add moisture, so it won’t work as well if you have oily skin. Using avocado oil does not leave much grease behind.

Avocado oil research study

Researchers have documented how natural oils like avocado oil can be beneficial for your skin. This works whether you use avocado oil alone or combine it with another remedy such as your favorite skin cream.

The beta-carotene, proteins, lecithin, fatty acids and vitamins A, D and E in avocado oil help hydrate your skin and protect it from harmful UV rays and also increase collagen metabolism. A 2015 study found that a topical skin cream consisting of avocado, tea tree, emu and jojoba oils had positive antimicrobial effects.

Avocado oil can also help heal wounds. A 2013 Trusted Source study found that the linoleic, oleic, and other monounsaturated fatty acids in avocado oil can speed wound healing.

The above results are from animal studies. More research needs to be done to study these effects of avocado oil on humans.

There is evidence that avocado oil may help treat skin conditions such as plaque psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune disease that causes thick, scaly, red patches on the skin. A 2001 study found that avocado oil mixed into vitamin B12 cream could relieve psoriasis symptoms for a longer period than traditional vitamin D-3 therapy. The researchers theorize that a vitamin B12 cream with avocado oil could be used as a long-term tropical treatment for psoriasis.

How to use avocado oil on your skin?

You can use avocado oil in your skincare routine in a variety of ways. You can massage the oil onto your skin, rub it on your face like a mask, or add it to your shower lotion. It can be used every day or a few times a month with no ill effects. Don’t know where to start? Try using avocado oil in the following ways:

As a lotion for chapped skin: After bathing, massage a generous amount of avocado oil into your skin. You can use the avocado oil alone, or add a few drops to one of your daily body lotions.

As a facial oil moisturizer
: fill 2/3 of a 30ml bottle with avocado oil. Choose another nourishing oil such as tamanu or emu and use it to fill the last third of the bottle. Add three to four drops of your favorite essential oil, such as lavender or rose. Twist the cap on and shake well.
Pour a little of your homemade oil into the palm of your hand, dab your fingers in the oil and apply it to your face. You can also use the oil as a hand cream. The oil can last up to a year if you keep the bottle out of sunlight.

As a homemade face mask: Dice a ripe avocado and add a small amount of avocado oil. Use a fork or spoon to mash it into an even paste. Apply the paste to your face and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. Depending on your skin type, you can wash off the avocado mask with warm water or a facial cleanser.

As a natural anti-aging skin cream
: Mix 1/4 cup avocado oil with 2 tablespoons coconut oil, 2 tablespoons beeswax, 1/2 teaspoon vitamin E oil and 1 tablespoon Shea butter in a glass jar. Place the jar, without a lid, in a pot filled with about ten inches of water. Bring to a boil. Stir the ingredients as they melt in the pot. Once melted, pour the cream into a smaller pot and let it stand until the mixture hardens. Put the lid on the jar and store the cream in a cool place.
